Americans generally have a smoother time than Britons on the pension question and a more complicated one on tax. Here is the shape of it — general information only, and worth confirming with the Social Security Administration and a cross-border accountant.
Payments abroad
US Social Security retirement benefits are generally payable to US citizens living in Thailand, and cost-of-living adjustments continue to apply — unlike the UK's frozen pension arrangement in some countries. Most people have payments sent to a US bank account and transfer money themselves.
- Keep a US bank account open — direct deposit is simplest and cheapest.
- Confirm reporting requirements with the SSA, including any periodic questionnaires sent to beneficiaries abroad.
- Non-citizen spouses and dependants can have different rules; check individually.
Medicare does not travel
That decision has consequences: dropping Part B and re-enrolling later can attract a permanent penalty. It is worth working through with someone who knows the rules rather than guessing.
Filing obligations follow you
- US citizens file US tax returns regardless of where they live.
- Foreign bank accounts over certain thresholds trigger FBAR and possibly FATCA reporting.
- Thailand may also tax you if you become tax resident there — the two systems interact via the treaty.
- Some Thai banks are cautious with US customers because of FATCA reporting obligations.
