The current position on this site

Every partner listing on the site today is a placeholder. No commercial agreement is in place with any company, no affiliate links are active, and nothing on the recommended services page is yet a recommendation of a specific business. The listings explain what each type of service does and what to watch out for, which is useful on its own.

When an agreement is signed, that listing will be marked as an active partner and will carry the commission disclosure. A listing described as a “potential partner – not yet active” means exactly that: a company we may work with, with no relationship in place today.

How affiliate arrangements work

When you follow a tracked link from this site to a service and go on to buy or enquire, the company may pay us a fee — a fixed amount per customer, a share of what you pay, or a fee per qualified enquiry. You pay exactly what you would have paid going direct. The company pays us out of its own marketing budget.

The rules we hold ourselves to

• A commission never determines whether a service appears here, or in what position.
• Every partner listing states the drawbacks as well as the advantages.
• We disclose the relationship next to the link, not only on this page.
• We turn down services we would not suggest to a friend, whatever they pay.
• If we would earn nothing from telling you to do something differently, and that is the better advice, we say it.
• We do not accept payment to remove or soften criticism.

Lead forms

Some pages — property, health insurance, visa help — invite you to send us your requirements so we can introduce you to a suitable partner. We may receive a referral fee for that introduction. We will only pass your details on where you have ticked the box agreeing to it, and we will tell you honestly if we cannot make a useful introduction rather than passing your details around.

Our own products

The guides and downloads sold on this site are ours. We keep the money, which is rather the point of selling them. They are described honestly, including what is not in them.
