Healthcare in Thailand, and How to Plan for It

The least interesting subject on this site, and comfortably the most important.

Thai private healthcare is fast, modern and comfortable. It is also a paying system, and the gap between an affordable consultation and an unaffordable admission is where retirements come unstuck.

Information only — not legal, tax, financial, insurance or medical advice.

Thailand’s visa, tax, healthcare and legal rules change, sometimes at short notice. Always confirm anything important with an official source or a qualified professional before you act on it. This page was last reviewed on 1 August 2026.

Four things to sort out, in this order

  1. 1

    Get insurance quotes now

Even if your move is two years away. Quotes today tell you what the market thinks of your health today — and that is the best it will ever be.

  2. 2

    Understand what is excluded

Read the exclusions before the benefits. Declare every condition and medication. Non-disclosure is the most common reason a large claim is refused.

  3. 3

Register at a hospital before you need one

Walk in on a quiet weekday, register, have a basic check-up. Being an existing patient with records on file changes the experience entirely.

  4. 4

    Write the emergency plan down

A wallet card with your insurer and emergency contact, a medication list with generic names, and someone who would notice if you vanished for two days.

Questions

Healthcare questions people ask

Do I need health insurance to retire in Thailand?

Some visa routes have carried a specific insurance requirement and others have not, and those requirements have changed over time. Separately from any visa rule, living in Thailand without health cover exposes you to bills that can run into millions of baht. Treat the visa question and the protection question as two different questions.

Can I get insurance if I am over 70?

It gets harder. Many insurers stop accepting new applicants somewhere in the seventies, premiums rise steeply, and more conditions get excluded. A policy held continuously from your fifties is worth far more than one you try to buy later.

What happens if I have a pre-existing condition?

Declare it. You may find it excluded, loaded with a higher premium, or accepted after a waiting period — all of which are better than a refused claim. Insurers treat conditions differently, so it is worth comparing several.

Are Thai hospitals any good?

The major private hospitals in Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Phuket are modern, well equipped and used to treating foreign patients, with short waits and accessible specialists. The system is a paying one, which is exactly why insurance matters.
